Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia)
The snow leopard is one of the world’s most elusive and magnificent predators, and Tajikistan’s rugged terrain is a key habitat for this endangered big cat. Known as the “ghost of the mountains” for its ability to blend seamlessly into its rocky surroundings, the snow leopard is a symbol of the wild Pamir. Our wildlife tours are designed to give you the best chance of spotting this incredible creature, while also contributing to vital local conservation projects that protect its habitat and future.
Species Facts
- A Vulnerable Species: The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) lists the snow leopard as Vulnerable, though their numbers are still declining in some areas due to poaching and habitat loss.
- Tajikistan’s Population: Tajikistan is a key habitat for the species, with an estimated population of 250-280 individuals, primarily found in the Pamir Mountain range.
- An Ecosystem Indicator: As a top predator, the health of the snow leopard population is a strong indicator of the overall health of the high-mountain ecosystems it inhabits.
- Prey Loss: One of the biggest threats to snow leopards is the loss of their primary prey, such as Marco Polo sheep and ibex, which forces them to prey on domestic livestock, leading to retaliatory killings by herders.
